4-19-10  City plans for park land raise concern. Base yard wrong for Hawaii Kai site, critics contend. The city wants to establish a Board of Water Supply base yard in East Honolulu, but one potential site is raising community concerns.

East Oahu residents concerned about boating safety  Posted: Nov 03, 2009 9:51 PM Updated: Nov 03, 2009 10:45 PM Featured Videos   East Oahu residents concerned about boating safety Deane Gonzalez Connect with us! By Mari-Ela David - bio | email

EAST OAHU (HAWAII NEWS NOW) - The East Oahu community is trying to learn from a boating tragedy that killed a young diver at Maunalua Bay last month.

They held a town hall meeting Tuesday night.

One solution residents brought up was to have the Coast Guard patrol Maunalua Bay and/or set up a neighborhood watch program to monitor activity in the waters.

The town hall meeting was at Hahaione Elementary's cafeteria. Among those  there were Keahi Lum's family, including his mom. They listened as residents shared with DLNR and elected officials their safety concerns. One diver says he nearly died after a boat smashed into his.

"Well basically someone tried to murder me. It's that simple," said Deane Gonzalez, a Hawaii Kai resident. "Me and my dive partner. My dive boat was cut loose while we were 60 feet under water while we were in Maunalua Bay diving."

17-year-old Lum died October 4th while diving off China Walls with two friends. A boat struck the Farrington High School student, injured another diver, the third was not hurt.

Some say one problem is that Hawaii doesn't require a license to operate a boat, so you end up with inexperienced boaters in the water.

UPDATE - September 21, 2009 -  City alters plans for lighting projects - http://bit.ly/iuunv Honolulu Adv.

Noticed the lighting work on Lunalilo Home Road?    click here for flyer - read/print questions   The initial reason for this project was to replace the corroded conduit for the street lights.  For “safety” reasons, we are going to get three new lights for every current light from Kalanianaole Hwy. all the way to Hawaii Kai Drive near the skateboard park.  Hawaii Kai Drive (starting at Kalanianaole Hwy.) is in the planning stages for increased lighting, and Kuliouou may be after that.

Here’s what the city told us about five months after the project started:  The city is replacing street lights on Lunalilo Home Road for $2.4M.  (Honolulu Star Bulletin, May 27, 2009, Newswatch item.).  Since then, community members have been asking questions and have learned that these lights will be pretty much the same as the old ones – same wattage, same pole height, etc.

Shark Report from Town Hall Meeting - click here/shark report

Proposed TV reality Show based on Shark Tours in Hawai'i.  Please take a moment to email the A. Smith & Company Productions letting them know you do not support this type of television series for Hawai’i.   Shark tours are unsafe for our ocean community members, it’s wrong for our ocean environment and it’s culturally insensitive to our Hawaiian community.  Below are few updates from Safe Waters for Hawai.

1)  You might have recently heard about, or read about, a proposed reality TV show on sharks tours in Hawai.  We hope you do not support this type of production that promotes shark tours and shark tour related activities in Hawai.  You can read about it by clicking the link below.
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118006424.html
We ask that you please email the A. Smith & Co. Productions, who are producing the program, and ask them to not to go forward with production of this reality series.

2)  Mahalo to the community in Maui and the Kihei Canoe Club who are working with their City Council and Councilmember Nishiki to pass an ordinance banning shark tours and shark tour activities in Maui County (Maui, Moloka and Lana).  We will keep you updated on when our neighbors on Maui need all of our help with testimony for their City Council.
3)  The illegal feeding of sharks in Hawai continues.  At the Safe Waters of Hawai website there is a new movie posted of sharks being fed during a tour on June 20th, 2009.  Our community is waiting for DLNR and NOAA to enforce the law.
